If I own the turbo tax deluxe cd will I still have to pay for the 1099

You can use Deluxe and Premier versions of TurboTax CD/Download software to enter 1099-MISC Income and Expenses at no extra charge.

You cannot use TurboTax Online versions of Deluxe and Premier to enter 1099-MISC Income and ExpensesHowever, you are able to enter 1099-MISC income without any expenses.

If you'd like to review all of the differences between CD/Download and Online products, you can do so here.

TurboTax Online will ask if you had any self-employment expenses during the year 1099-MISC income was received. If you answer yes, you will be upgraded the Self-Employed software.

If you need help entering or editing 1099-MISC income:

  1. Open the return on your computer or TurboTax Online (can't sign in? Can't find the file in Windows?  In Mac?)
  2. Click Federal Taxes at the top
  3. Go to Wages & Income to load Your Income Summary (if asked, select choose what I work on)
  4. If necessary, scroll down to 1099-MISC and Other Common Income then click Start/Edit/Update to the right. This opens the 1099-MISC Summary, where you can add, edit or delete your entries.

If you'd like to enter expenses:

  1. Repeat step 3
  2. Scroll down to Business Items (pictured below), then select Start/Edit/Update.
  3. Select Yes on the next screen to open the Business Summary. Here's where you can addedit or delete your business entries.
  4. To enter expenses, add a business profile or edit an existing one. You'll have to click continue on each screen until you're brought to Business Expenses.

Tip for Desktop: See 'Search a topic or ask a question...' to the upper right? Search for the exact phrase 'expenses, self-employed', click Jump to and go directly to Business Summary!

Differences for Business or Self-Employed Users:

  • Instead of Federal Taxes, you may see Business at the top. Select this to go to Business Income and Expenses (if asked, select choose what I work on)
  • Choosing Start/Edit/Update brings you directly into Business Summary.
