If you are using online TurboTax, you pay separately for each federal return and each state return.
If you are using the CD/download that included a state software program, then you would have to pay each time you e-file a state return. With the CD/download, even if the software includes the program to prepare state returns, there is a fee each time you choose to e-file the state. You can avoid the state e-file fee by printing and mailing the state returns. Before March 1 the state e-file fee is $20; after March 1 it increases to $25.
If you are using the TurboTax online editions you can only file one tax return per User ID. To file another return using the online editions you would have to create a new account with a new User ID.
If not using the TurboTax Free online edition, you will have to pay for each account and for the state return on each account. There are no e-filing fees using the online editions.
With 4 tax returns needing to be filed you should be using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download edition of Deluxe or higher. You get one free state Download with the desktop editions of Deluxe or higher. You can file as many federal and state returns as needed using the desktop editions with no further charges for the software when using the same state on all the returns.
Note - There is a state e-file fee of $20 for each state return e-filed. The price increases to $25 on March 1. You can avoid the state e-file fee by printing and mailing the state returns.
