Since you were legally married in 2023 on your 2023 tax return you file as either Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately. You should file as MFJ to get the best outcome on your 2023 tax return, even if one spouse has little or no income.
From Tax Year 2023, the year we are filing now, you will have to either filing Married Filing Separately or Married Filing Jointly, as long as you are married. If you file jointly, you are eligible for more credits than if you file separately. However, some people choose to file separate for a variety of reasons including student loan repayments.
You can put your information in both ways. One where you do a return for you each individually, and one where you do it jointly then compare to see which way you make out best. Be sure you do NOT submit your return until you have decided for sure which way you want to file.
