If I ended up owing taxes this year, does Turbo Tax pay the IRS and my State what I owe (via direct debit) or do I need to pay them myself?

TurboTax does not pay any type of taxes owed, federal or state.

You choose how you want to pay the taxes owed in the File section of the program on Step 2.  If you choose direct debit and enter the bank routing and account numbers to pay the taxes owed, that information is sent with your e-filed tax returns.  The IRS debits your account for the federal taxes owed.  If your state accepts direct debit when using tax preparation software, then your state debits your account for the state taxes owed.

Super helpful. Thanks! Do you know how I can go back to see what I selected in Steps 1 and 2? So the IRS and the state of Missouri have not debited anything and I would like to make sure I set it up correctly.

How you chose to pay the taxes owed and the date selected will be on the Federal Filing Instructions page for the federal taxes owed and on the State Filing Instructions page for the state taxes owed.  It will be also be shown on the Federal Information Worksheet Part V and the State Information Worksheet Part V if direct debit was used.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2020 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets
