If I do my taxes with my w-2 and don't have a dependent can I still get a refund back

Yes, it's very possible to receive a refund without a dependent.  There are a lot of deductions and credits that don't rely on having a dependent.  Also, a lot will depend on how much withholding you had during the year from your W2 job and what allowances you were claiming on your paycheck (0,1,2).
