If I am single and retired, with an unearned income that is less than $15,000 and received less than $6000 for playing for a church, do I have to file?

The money received from playing for a church is in another state and because I don't own a car I use a rental, can the rental amount be claimed? Having found I owe federal taxes, is there a tax credit that may reduce that amount?

If you owe federal taxes, then yes, you will need to file.

If this is self-employment income then you will be able to claim the rental as a deduction.  If this is work as an employee where you receive a W-2, you will not be able to claim it as employee business expenses are no longer deductible.

Pension may be taxable.  Is the $6,000 self-employment income?

It's non-employee compensation.  The pension amount was $739

If it's non-employee compensation, then yes, you need to file.  It is over the $400 limit.

I received a 1099. Is it possible to file as self-employed and retired?
