A temporary absence for school or medical treatment does not subtract from the time a child lived with you. That is considered a temporary absence by the IRS and doesn't count.

Short term absence ( to go to school/ college etc. ) from his/her residence ( your home ) is not considered as absence. You still count all 12 moinths
