A couple weeks ago my spouse and I filed and received Identity Protection Pins via the IRS website. We have both received pins stating they are "Identity Protection Pin (IP Pin) 2023".
I just want to make sure about this - it's for when we file the 2023 tax returns next year in 2024 - not the current filing for the 2022 tax returns in process now.

Yes, if it states it is your 2023 IP PIN it will be utilized for your 2023 tax return, provided you file within 1 calendar year of receiving your PIN. Keep in mind that the IP PIN will change every year until you notify the IRS it will no longer be necessary, if ever.

An Update: Much to my surprise - my 2022 federal tax return was rejected. After entering the IP PIN 2023 it was accepted. I have to say I was quite surprised - but - just glad my return was accepted with the IP PIN.
Did you end up getting your refund using the 2023 PIN for 2022 or was it held up and eventually rejected?
Interesting...one of the IRS FAQs for the IP PIN:
"If we assigned you an IP PIN, you must use it to confirm your identity on any return filed during the current calendar year. This includes current year returns as well as any delinquent tax returns."
So it sounds like it is used for any tax year's return, filed after the IP PIN was assigned.....at least for the one year that the IP PIN is still in effect.
Got my 2023 IP PIN today (April 18, tax day!), and it worked for filing my 2022 Federal Return :-).
I had a previous year's PIN, and the process was very quick to get a new PIN at ID.me .
