I would like to file my taxes for the 2025 tax year as Married Filing Separately, but I am unable to find that option in TurboTax. I have cleared the online form multiple times while trying to figure out how to select this filing status. For the 2025 tax year, I have been advised to file as Married Filing Separately. Could you please guide me through the TurboTax portal on how to choose this option?

Did you file Joint last year?   You probably need to set up a new account for yourself and not transfer from last year.

Then in your account when you fill out your personal info under My Info you enter your name and pick married.  It will ask if you are filing together or filing separately.   You will need to enter your spouse’s name to file MFS.

Why do you want to file MFS?   Joint is usually the best way to file.   You can lose several credits filing Separate.

You can start another return in TurboTax Online by:

  1. Logging out if you are in your account
  2. Choose what TurboTax Online product you want to use for the second return
  3. Create your account screen
  4. Set up a new login for the second return
  5. Start working on the new return

The My Info section contains the option for filing status.

Log into TurboTax

  1. Select Personal Info [Continue]
  2. On the left sidebar choose My Info
  3. Under your name [Review]
  4. You will come to the screen About your household
    1. Select Married and then
    2. click on Plan to file separately or as Head of Household (special rules apply)
