I do not understand how the total some of the two states income is higher then the total federal income?

New York state has a reporting requirement for employers- they require the State Wages to match the Box 1 amounts on the W2, see TSB-M-02(3)I:(5/02) - Department of Taxation and Finance. You will have to allocate the amount that you earned in the other state and New York. (You can usually just subtract the amount from the other state to determine the amount earned in New York).
