I was wondering why I had to pay extra to file my MA state return where I already upgraded from the free to the deluxe version to file my 1099-R?

I was using the free version of TuboTax, but I had to upgrade to the Deluxe version for $39.99 because I had to file a 1099-R, which I understand. But I am not sure why I also had to pay an extra $36.99 to file my MA state income taxes (which is usually free to do in the free version).

The state filing fee is seperate from the federal. If you notice on this link- https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/online/ - Deluxe, Premier, and Self Employed all have an additional fee for state tax filing.

Okay thanks. That fee is pretty ridiculous to add on top of already being forced to upgrade to Deluxe. Deluxe should cover that regardless since it is free to transfer the overlapping info from the Federal file to the State file in the Absolute 0 product.
