I was under impression it was free to file for military? Why the 140$ charge plus the direct deposit fee? Doesn’t seem like a very good deal when H and R offer cheaper rates

For 2019?  It shows you are in the Free Edition.  Yes this year most military is free.  And there never is a charge for Direct Deposit.  You might be seeing a Service charge if you want to have the fees deducted from your refund.  But you can avoid that by paying the fees upfront with a credit card.
