I was told that even if I got divorced in 2018, I had the option to file joint with my ex-wife. Is that true??

No that is not true. If you were not legally married on 12/31/2018 then you can only file your 2018 tax return as Single.

No, that is not true. If you are not married as of December 31, you can only file as Single or Head of Household if you have qualifying dependents.
