If you have a 6-digit Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) that the IRS is expecting, here's how to go back into the interview to enter it.   Be sure you are using your new IP PIN for calendar year 2026 which came out in January.

I assume you are using Online TurboTax.  Log in and go to the Tax Home.   Your return interview is likely to be closed, but to reopen the interview look for a link "Add a State."   That does not really add one, but should take you back into the interview..

When your interview reopens, you should have a full left column menu.

Federal tab> Other tax situations > Identity PINs

Or here's an alternate path:

  • With the return interview open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose the blue button Topic Search.
  • In the search line enter the words IP PIN without quotes.
  • Make the selection in the list (may already be highlighted), and either double-click it or click on GO.
  • Next screen:  "Were you assigned an Identity Protection PIN?"
  • Finish that topic.

Hi @mesquitebean

Thanks for your reply.  This was never an issue with Desktop TurboTax for the past years and it came up after I switched to Online version this year.  I already checked the Identity Protection PIN is not mandatory based on IRS documentation and used the TOOLS menu to reenter the same answer again.

1. Is there another to get pass this error without requesting IRS for the pin?

2. If not, what are the IRS requirements to obtain this pin? how long will it typically take (we have only 15 days left before the deadlin)?

Please post the exact rejection error code/message so we can see exactly what the rejection is.

For some reason the IRS is expecting the first-named filer (primary taxpayer) on the return to have a 6-digit IP PIN.   You will not be able to efile without the IP PIN.  If you don't use one, you would have to file a paper return in the mail.

The IRS mails some people a new IP PIN every January.  If you did not get a letter in January with your IP PIN, the fastest way to get it is to retrieve it from your IRS online account if you have one.  If not, you will need to establish one.  Otherwise, if you have to get your IP PIN by mail, it can take up to 21 days.     If you are due a tax refund on your Federal return, there is no penalty for a late Federal return.   On the other hand, if you owe Federal (or state) taxes due, you can request an extension of time to file, but you still have to pay any taxes due by the April filing deadline.  But you should be able to do this in 1 day at the online IRS account.   This is a common situation.   There are other advantages of the online IRS account as well.

If you don't already have an IRS online account, you can create one in one or two sittings.  It's a tad onerous since you first have to create an ID.me account which requires a photo ID.  Then the ID.me account is used to sign into your online IRS account.   If the IRS has assigned you an IP PIN, you should be able to view it in the Profile section.
