I was informed that I could enter a control number from box d and get my w2 imported but there is no control number do I need to enter it all by hand

In some cases, we'll need the Box d Control Number from your W-2, but only if your payroll provider requires this for the import (not all of them do).

For your added convenience, we now offer the option of auto filling your W-2 data by taking a picture of your W-2 paper form with your smart phone. Please see FAQ(link below) on how to do so.
