Were you claimed on someone's 2020 return or just 2019? If you are trying to file for yourself you may have to print and mail your return. Why is it rejecting? For the AGI or because you were already claimed for 2020?
Yes i was filed for both 2019 & 2020 . I keep getting rejected because i’m claimed as a dependent for 2020.
Then to claim yourself you have to print and mail. But be sure you don't actually qualify as a dependent. You do not get a choice. You might actually qualify as their dependent.
If i mail it do you know if i will get my 2 stimulus payments? And i shouldn’t qualify to be one.
You include the first 2 missing stimulus on your return. It will be on 1040 line 30.
When you go through the federal review tab it will ask how much you got if any. Or to enter your stimulus payment in TurboTax, type "stimulus" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to stimulus." Say no to the amounts it shows you. Then 2 boxes will open up for each round. If you didn't get one enter a 0 in the box.
After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.
If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.
The Recovery rebate credit is on 1040 line 30. It either adds to your refund or reduces a tax due.
So once i do that . I just print & mail it off right?
Q> So once i do that . I just print & mail it off right?
A> Yes, Sign it. Attach a copy of your W-2 and any other documents showing withholding of federal income tax.
Q> If i mail it do you know if i will get my 2 stimulus payments?
A> We don't know. Prior to stimulus money , this was a common and straight forward situation. The IRS processed your return, in the normal time (6-8 weeks) and sent you your refund.
Shortly (up to a year) thereafter, you’d receive a letter from the IRS, stating that your exemption (dependency) was claimed on another return. It would tell you that if you made a mistake to file an amended return and if you didn't make a mistake to do nothing. The other party got the same letter you did. If one of you doesn't file an amended return, unclaiming the exemption, the next letter, from the IRS, will require you to provide proof.
With stimulus money being on the table, we don't yet know what the IRS will be. You may be required to show proof first. Let's us know, here, what your experience turns out to be.
Your best strategy is to coordinate with the other person. Normally your dependency is only worth $500 to them and nothing to you (personal exemptions were eliminated in 2018) unless you were a qualifying child for EIC or a student for the tuition credit. But this year (2020) there's the $1800 stimulus. And now, there's the issue of the $1400 2021 stimulus.
