I want to do my 2017 and 2018 taxes. If I buy the old 2017 software would I then be able to easily figure out investments etc. or should I use the 2018 program for both?

I have started both years on TT. it tells me to upgrade to amend the 2017. After 90 minutes of attempting to find the place to upgrade I am giving up. (I did read the instructions, over and over but they do not work).

My goal is to get the ease of TT for the 2017 taxes. Would be better to buy the old version to do that? What is my best course of action to do both years? I can pay for both years' software if I am getting the benefits of doing things like feeding the data in directly from investment account. Do I get that for both years if I buy the 2018 Home and Business? Or do I get it only for 2018? Do I get it for 2017 if I buy the 2017 Home and Business? Can that be upgraded to do 2018 as well?

You have to buy and do each year separate.  So you need a 2017 program and a 2018 program.

Did you start both years using Turbo Tax Online?  Did you file 2017 or need to finish it?  You do not amend if you did not file.

Do you want to switch to the Desktop program?  If you started 2018 online we can tell you how to move it to the Desktop program.

Thank you so much. I did not file but I started both years with TT online. I would prefer to do it all online rather than use desktop. However, the only option seems to be the desktop. That's OK, I will do that for 2017. I am just hoping that the 2017 will give me the option of automating the investment stuff, will it? As if i have to do it by hand, it may be too difficult as I am not knowledgeable.

No, it's too late to import to 2017.  You can only import the current year.

When you finish 2017 you can Transfer it into the 2018 Online return version.  Unless you entered too much in 2018 and don't want to start over.  But I guess when you started 2018 it transferred your incomplete 2017 info.

I guess there is no point in using it for 2017 then, though it could help for 2018, but not worth paying for if it lacks the features that make it useful. TT should make this clear. Thanks!

But don't you still need to finish and file 2017?

Yes I still need to finish and file 2017. But it is impossible to access it without purchasing an upgrade. I actually tried to do that, read the instructions over and over but could not find the upgrade button. Then, I am not certain how much I would be charged as what I would need to buy is not clear. TT does not provide adequate information and sends me on wild goose chases. Seems easier to just do by hand with forms from IRS.
