I want to confirm that for expat's the IRS deadline is May 17th instead of April 15th

This year the deadline for ALL individual taxpayers has been moved to May 17, 2021.

The normal filing deadline for expats is actually June 15 of each year.

There are no late filing penalties for payment made after the normal filing deadline (May 17, 2021 or April 15 in a typical year) for taxpayers living abroad as long as they file by their June 15 deadline.  The IRS does charge interest and late payment penalties. These penalties are significantly less than the late filing penalties.

U.S citizens and permanent residents living abroad also have until June 15th of each year to file their request for an extension to file their taxes by October 15th, while residents living in the United States must request an extension by the normal filing deadline each year.
