I want to change my state tax returns to be mailed, but it seems complicated. I'll even delete them if necessary. I want to change to efiling to only my federal.

You can either delete your state return, e-file your federal and then come back later to do your state return or you e-file your federal and mail your state return by following step 2 below:

1. Delete your state return, file your federal return now, and then come back later re-do your state return; or
2. Pay for both your federal and state returns now, and when you get to the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select the File by mail button and click the I'm not ready to file radio button below your state and click save.

Method 1 doesn't require up-front payment for your state, but you'll have to re-enter your state information. Method 2 saves the work you did on your state return but requires up-front payment.

Thank you for your response. Actually, I did register, so I will need to delete everything and start over again. Is that possible?

Since you did register you won't be able to delete only edit or start over or you can pay for both Federal and State now and e-file federal and mail your State as reviewed in #2 (Pay for both your federal and state returns now, and when you get to the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select the File by mail button and click the I'm not ready to file radio button below your state and click save.)

In the TurboTax FAQ above in my original answer it gives you the directions to delete your return but since you won't have that option follow the same steps but instead of selecting delete select Start Over.

Sign in to your return, if you're not already signed in.
(To do this, sign in to TurboTax and select the blue Take me to my return button.)
Select State, and then Your State Returns.
On that screen, select start over

If you don't see the Continue or Delete button on the Your State Returns screen please do the following:

Select State.
Select the Your State Returns screen.
Select Start next to the state you want to delete.
After the transfer of the information completes, select Continue.
Once the next screen has loaded, select State and then Your State Returns.
Select start over next to the state that you want to start over

In some cases, you won't see the option to delete, just Edit and Start Over. This is because you either already paid for your state or registered your free version while that state was attached to your return.
