I've always filed self employed and it has always been free. Now, the recommendation costs. What's going on?

TurboTax Self-employed version has NEVER been free.

For online edition, If you do not have any related expenses to claim, you can simply use TurboTax Deluxe online edition which costs less.  If you have the expenses, you have to use TurboTax Self-Employed edition.

If it's the desktop edition and you have the simple expenses, you can just use the TurboTax Deluxe edition.

Or did you file a self-employed return previously by using the TurboTax Free File Program, previously known as Freedom Edition (not the same as regular Free Edition)?   You have to meet one of the qualifications to use the Free File Program:

1) 2018 AGI of $34,000 or less
or
2) Eligible for EIC (earned income credit)
or
3)  Active duty military including Reservists/ National Guard with military W-2 and 2018 AGI of $66,000 or less
