Very sorry for your loss. You do not say when your spouse passed away. Was it in 2025?
For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return. That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $31,500 (+ $1600 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.
In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info, there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.
If you have qualifying dependent children you will be able to file as a qualifying surviving spouse (QSS) for the next two years after this tax return. Post back if you need further help.

Thank you so much! Yes, I have been googling and read that I can still file jointly. He died in July 2025. Thank you so much for the info you sent. I will probably need to hire a professional to help me file. We both have been using Turbo Tax for the last several years. Not sure I can navigate this year's return by myself. I think Turbo Tax has experts that can help though. Will check into it. In the meantime, I was approved for an extension.
Again thank you, I appreciate your responding!
Very best,
Teri
Sorry for your loss. I lost my husband in 2023. Seems like yesterday. What do you mean you both have been using Turbo Tax? Have you been file a Joint return from 1 Online account or the Desktop program?
You can still file a joint return as normal for 2025. Are you able to log into the Joint account?
Thank you and I am so sorry for your loss!! It is so very difficult. We used turbo tax (installed it on my desktop) to do our taxes jointly for the about 3 years. This is the first year I am without him.
I have to check if I can log into the joint account here. I hope to God they don't have his old cell. I can't log onto the IRS anymore at all because they want to send a code to his old cell and they have nowhere to change the number. I will see tomorrow if I can get on here. I am wondering how to navigate the death of a spouse with the turbo tax program. I think I would pay for one of the experts on here. I got approved for an extension, through his name and social as he was the primary name on there. I am doing a big move back east (in Cali now) in a few weeks so once settled I will do a tax return jointly. Have a wonderful Easter if you celebrate!! Best, Teri
