I took my dependent 24 yr old off my medical insurance for 2017 to force her to get a job and out-of-pocket exp was killing me. She didn't get a job. Did I mess up?

I wasn't going to claim her as a dependent but read I have to.

Hi!  To claim a child as a dependent, as of December 31, 2017, they would have to be less than 19, or a "student" less than 24.  If she was 24 at all during the year 2017, you wouldn't be able to claim her as a dependent child.  You may be able to claim her as a different category of dependent, which the IRS has a step by step walkthrough to see if she what she could qualify as:

Hope this helps!

My question wasn't if I could claim her as a dependent. My question was is it better to keep paying her medical insurance and claim her or just file single and dump her medical insurance? Which would be financially better for me?
