I signed kid up for afterschool prog, allows me to work more hrs. Afterschool prog occurred in 2018, but was paid for in 2017. What tax year do i claim it in?

You claim this expense in the year that you paid it (2017).

thanks! Now if only I could also claim some child care expenses I paid for in 2016 in tax year 2017. But I'm sure the answer to that is "no, you can't. You'd have to amend your 2016 return". For the amount I might gain, it's not worth that trouble.
