I recently remarried (April 2016) while stationed overseas and moved back to the USA this year. No SSN for spouse until after the deadline. What do I do?

The SSN was applied for with green card and has not yet arrived. I have a date for SSN Office however the tax deadline will pass prior to receipt of number. I do not anticipate any past due tax. How do I file an extension? Your site is requiring an SSN for the spouse.

If you are filing a joint return, you do not have to enter your wife's information in the EASY extension request. At this point she does not have a filing requirement and you don't need to declare your filing status as part of the extension.

You can file a paper extension by mail, include your wife's name and list her SSN as "APPLIED FOR".

IRS Form 4868: Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return -  complete and print the form, and send it to the IRS address for your state.
