You do not deduct it. You enter your 1099G and let the software take care of calculating how much of your unemployment is taxable. The software can figure it out for you. Just enter how much unemployment you received and how much tax--if any-- was withheld. TT will do the rest.
Enter your 1099G in Federal>Wages & Income>Unemployment
How can I be sure that Turbo Tax has made the adjustment? I have the CD-ROM for 2020 Premier and I can't confirm that the 10,200 adjustment is being made.
If you are using the CD/download switch to Forms mode and look at Schedule 1 line 8.
You should see the adjustment flow through on your Forms tab.
Look for Schedule 1, line 8.
The adjustment will be reflected as UCE with the amount backed out under Other Income.
I am using the CD version of Premier for 2020. I just checked my Schedule 1 and the update is not registered there. What do I do?
Turbo Tax is updated for it. You don't have to do anything special to get it. It is automatic. Just enter the full amount on your 1099G. If the exclusion doesn't show up you may need to update the Desktop program. Try doing a manual update.
If updating doesn't help or you are using the Online version then delete the 1099G and re enter it.
Or do you have a high income?
If you have unemployment you can exclude up to 10,200 (per spouse) if your income is under $150,000. Your unemployment compensation will be on Schedule 1 line 7. The exclusion will be on Schedule 1 Line 8 as a negative number. The result flows to Form 1040 Line 8.
Thanks SO much!
My income is 80K so the exemption should apply. I will try your suggestions.
