i received l notice that we did not file last year. the check was cashed that we sent with the forms that were filed. it states that we have a credit amount of that check. checking to make sure this is not a scam

The IRS sent out a lot of letters.  The last couple years were a mess and the IRS got way behind processing returns.

I have seen a few similar cases. This means that the IRS has "mislaid" your return. 

If you receive such notice from the IRS, just reply that the return was sent with the check that was cashed and attach a copy of the return that you sent originally.
