I received a 1099c. I have no w2 to file and my agi is well below the standard deduction. I have no tax to pay. Do I need to pay $39 to file if I owe nothing?

I filled out tge turbo tax info and it says I owe no taxes. But wants to charge me $39 to file. Is it necessary to file as I'm below the agi standard deduction?

there are certain situations where your AGI can be below the standard deduction and still have to file. in chart A read about the definition of gross income. i have provided a link to the IRS instructions for who must file starting on page 8. look at charts A and C to see if any of these apply to you. if you don't meet any of the requirements to file save the $39

Thank you for the reply. According to those charts it looks like I don't need to file.

For future reference ... the IRS has FREE FILE options you can use if you qualify and wait until mid January when they come online.
