An independent contractor normally receives a 1099-MISC with an amount in box 7 for "non-employee compensation". The IRS considers you as self-employed.
If you choose to use the Online product, you must upgrade to the Self Employed version to be able to enter 1099-MISC income for independent contractor work. It requires Schedule C which is only in TurboTax Self Employed.
With the CD/download product, you could use any version because they all include Schedule C. However, you would get more guidance for entering the income and expenses with the Home & Business version.
