I received a 1099 misc for being an independent contractor. What do I do?

An independent contractor normally receives a 1099-MISC  with an amount in box 7 for "non-employee compensation". The IRS considers you as self-employed.

If you choose to use the Online product, you must upgrade to the Self Employed version to be able to enter 1099-MISC income for independent contractor work. It requires Schedule C which is only in  TurboTax Self Employed.

With the CD/download product, you could use any version because they all include Schedule C. However, you would get more guidance for entering the income and expenses with the Home & Business version.

Please see FAQ below for instructions to enter your 1099-MISC for Self-employment income.
