I past years I have always paid once for our state filing, using it for myself and my partner. Why did I have to pay each time this year for a total of $50?

In the Desktop program each state efile has always been 20 early or 25 after March 1.  Maybe you printed and mailed state before?  Or had the efile fee deducted from a federal refund?

FYI, to anyone who may be interested.

In years past, I always paid once for a state filing. This year I was forced to pay twice. I was able to finally get someone on the telephone, after 2 hours or so. They told me that I was charged twice because I twice filed for the same state. This is wrong and dishonest. They will not pay me the added fee back! I have used this software for about 20 years, which I told the woman who was "helping" me. I shall not use it again. I will urge others NOT to use this program!

As I said before you pay a fee to efile EACH state return.  You should check back though your credit card statements or Turbo Tax emails and you should have 2 charges.    Or since it is for another person check their credit card too.  You should each have a charge or one of you had it deducted from the federal refund or printed and mailed the state.  The only state returns that are free to efile is New York.

What I have always got with a purchase of Turbotax was a free Fed. return, then pay for each state return to be filed in individual states; but, if only filing for two parties in one state, I would pay for that state once. Not twice. This year I had to pay for two filings in one state, twice.
