I only want the federal return, yet I can't delete the state return. The trash can is not an option on the page.

If you have already paid the TurboTax Fees you will not be able to delete the state return. However, you will be able to file the federal without the state. When you get to the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select the File by mail button and click the I'm not ready to file radio button below your state and click save.
