Looking thru the 1040 instructions, it appears that if your taxes (line 11) are greater than your total child tax credit & credit for other dependents (line 12a), no additional forms are needed to claim the those credits for 2018. Thus, if line 11 tax is greater than $2,000 (the full CTC for one child), the new one-page 1040 is enough for you. (It's officially a half page front & back; TurboTax prints both on the same side as allowed by the IRS -- easier to print.)
Only if those credits exceed your taxes do you have to complete Schedule 8812 to see if you can claim the "additional child tax credit", or the part of the child tax credit that is "refundable" to you even if you didn't owe any tax (like the EITC).
