To maximize your tax withholding from your paycheck fill out a new Form W-4 and enter an additional amount in Step 4(c), making sure that you select "Single" filing status. You can skip step 2 & 3 to create the highest tax liability. You can use this TurboTax W-4 Withholding Calculator to determine how much to enter.

Thank you! But if I am married, filing jointly and my spouse and I have multiple jobs, do we just need to enter an additional amount to withhold per check? On a recent paycheck, I noticed there was zero withheld for federal taxes. Do you know if there is a certain amount where federal tax is not taken out? I did not mark exempt.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It's possible to still have withholding with very little earnings - it depends on what you entered on your Form W-4. Contact your employer/ their payroll office with questions about the information on your pay stub.

As @LindaS5247 advised earlier, you can also enter an additional amount on your new W-4 in Step 4(c) to increase your withholding by a specific amount every pay period. If you have an idea how much additional withholding you need to cover your tax liability for the year 2026, divide that amount by the number of pay periods remaining in the year to get the amount to enter in Step 4(c) for one of your W-4 forms.

In TurboTax, select Other Tax Situations, then Form W-4 and Estimated Taxes to prepare a W-4 in the program that you can give to your employer.

In addition, TurboTax's TaxCaster is available without opening your return and will estimate your total taxes. It is currently set to calculate 2025 taxes but you could use your 2026 estimated income and deductions to get a good estimate for 2026.

You can also use the IRS Withholding Estimator to calculate amounts to be withheld from wages.
