@mazenmaarouf , (a) for 2018 return preparation you need TurboTax 2018 - it is available only as download -- please call TurboTax customer service to purchase . Then after preparing the return you will have to file by mail; (b) For 2019 filing as an Expat -- again I suggest using downloaded/ CD desktop version ofthe software. This will allow you to view the worksheets and forms as they are prepared-- you can e-file the return from abroad; (c) to be able to exclude Foreign Earned Income you will need to pass Physical Presence test -- 330 days present abroad in a test period of continuous 12 months, using form 2555 -- again Turbotax will walk you through this .
Generalties aside , if you need more on this, please feel welcome to ask in your response -- need to know (a) if you are US citizen/Resident (Green Card ); (b) when did you arrive at the foreign site; (c) is your family with you ; (d) are you working for a foreign entity or a foreign subsidiary of a US entity; (e) which country are you in etc.
Hi, I also have a question regarding this.
I am wondering what software to purchase to file my 2018 tax return. I was abroad for the entire year and will need to file a 2555.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2016, 2017 and 2018 is permanently closed.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2016, 2017, or 2018 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
@jasminetlarson , agreeing with @xmasbaby0 's excellent answer, just would like to ask that please answer the questions that I posed earlier ( above ) for more help on filling out your return for 2018.
Assuming that (a) you are US citizen/GreenCard holder, (b) you were in one of the countries that US has a tax treaty with and/or not under US sanctions , (c) you were self-employed or employed by a local entity and (d) you had a foreign tax home etc. etc. you should be able to exclude your foreign earned income from US taxation by using form 2555. Depending on your particular circumstances and facts, you may need to consider whether income exclusion or foreign tax credit is better for you. Therefore I suggest that you complete your 2018 preparation before you complete 2019.
Is there more I can do for you ?
I am a US citizen, I was working in China at an International School. I just need to file for income taxes for 2018 I had no assets. I've already filed for 2019. I just need to know which software to buy that will allow me to do a 2555 form and I realize I will have to mail it in. Can I just buy the deluxe version? Thanks.
Yes. All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help in the higher versions.
