Thank you for responses! After pouring over the prompts again I realized I missed an "or" because I was too focused on the bolded statements. The Part-Time for South Carolina prompts: Enter the following items that you earned in South Carolina or while you were a resident of South Carolina. (I missed the or which I have underlined). Per that, I am able to enter the entire year covering both resident and earned income. Thanks!
Could you please clarify why you are attempting to file a part-year and a nonresident return for the same state and what state are you trying to file in
@LeonardS - thanks for the question!
Employer is in SC. I worked for employer all of 2021. I lived in SC for half of 2021 (earning income as a resident of SC). I moved to NC then earned income in SC as a nonresident of SC.
Per other answers in community, seems I need to file part-year for SC (for the first half of the year), part-year for NC (for the second half of the year), and nonresident for SC (for the second half of the year).
State residency status is based on the entire tax year.
You're a part-year resident of South Carolina if you moved into or out of a permanent home in South Carolina during 2021. In your situation, you would be a part-year resident for 2021
North Carolina also defines a "part-year resident" as an individual who moves his or her domicile (legal residence) into or out of North Carolina during the tax year. So you are a part-year resident of North Carolina also.
The income you earned from SC after you moved to NC does not affect your residency in either state.
Thanks for your response! So, if all income from 2021 was taxable in SC (first as resident, then as non-resident) - I can just file as part time resident? My concern is the part time form only asks me to enter income earned WHILE A RESIDENT which does not cover the income earned in the state while not a resident. How would you suggest going about that? Thanks for any additional help.
Because of your unique situation, you can file as a non-resident of South Carolina, which is partially true, since you weren't a resident at the end of the year. This will allow you to report all income earned in the state which is the important thing. There is no way to file as a part-year resident and a non-resident, so filing as a non-resident is the next best choice.
