I need to file 2 state returns (Primary via e-file, secondary on paper). The software takes me to a purchase page when I start the 2nd one.

That pretty much sums it up.  I don't want to e-file the secondary state, it's not worth it.

You only get one free state with the software, you would need to purchase the second.

In the Desktop program you get one free state PROGRAM download to prepare unlimited returns in that state.  Then if you need to file in Another state you have to buy an additional state program.

THEN You can print and mail the state for free or each state (including the first one) is 19.99 or 24.99 to efile.

Thanks.  Seems when I had to do this some years ago, they included the additional state.

You are probably remembering wrong.  You might have had the charge deducted from your federal refund.  Or it was a second state return for the same state.

Yes in the Desktop program if you need to file a second state return (different state) you have to buy additional state program download for 39.99.  And then it’s still 19.99 to efile or you can print and mail state for free.
