When you are using TurboTax to prepare an ITIN application return, you will need to use a "dummy" SSN (like 999-88-9999) in order to get through all of the diagnostics. You will not be able to e-file the return, but it must be mailed in. When your return prints out, you will then white-out the aritificial SSN and replace it with the word "Applied". You will need to attach a completed Form W-7 to the return. Form W-7 is not supported in TurboTax but may be obtained by clicking on the following link for the IRS website: About Form W7 | Internal Revenue Service
You will also need supporting identity documentation. The passport is prefered, but your wife's birth certificate and a state or country picture ID card will be acceptable. Then the return may be mailed to the following address:
Internal Revenue Service
Austin Service Center
ITIN Operation
P.O. Box 149342
Austin, TX 78714-9342
If you do not wish to mail the ID documents, then you have two other options. You may choose to visit an IRS Service Center to have the documents verified, or you may visit a Certified Acceptance Agent.
