There are lots of possible reasons for an efile rejection. Please provide the rejection error code and message.
Here's more info:
If you are sure you are getting a Federal refund, there is no penalty for a late Federal return. State rules might vary.
If you owe taxes due, however, and if your efile rejected prior to the deadline, you have a 5-day grace period to make the correction and resubmit the efile or to postmark a paper return to avoid a failure-to-file penalty. However, any taxes due still should have been paid by the April 15 deadline; otherwise there would be a failure-to-pay penalty. If you owe taxes due, you should pay as soon as possible by successfully filing and paying (or paying at the IRS website or your online IRS account) to "stop the clock" on any failure-to-pay penalty and interest.
