I may need to file for an extension because i am waiting on a 1095-A. How difficult is this and how long does it take to get confirmation from the IRS that it's approved

The request for an extension is automatic, assuming that you file the request by the due date (April 18 this year), and it's  free through TurboTax.

You have nothing to lose by filing an extension immediately. Please retain proof that you have filed, in case the IRS can't find your form 4868.
