I made an extension with estimated payment last year. When finished I made a final tax payment. How do I update that so the final payment is reflected on my 2016 taxes?

I am seeing the estimated payment reflected on my 2015 credits but I am not seeing a credit for the final 2015 taxes payment anywhere.  Of course all of this was filed in 2016.  Thanks

If you are referring to the amount paid with your Federal return, it should have carried over.  However, the Federal taxes paid for a prior year do not affect the current year taxes.  (If you live in a state that allows a Federal tax deduction, you will be asked in the state interview questions.)

If you are referring to state taxes paid with your return, they are reported in the same area as your extension payment, just under a different category.

  • Log into your return
  • Click on Federal Taxes
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Scroll to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid (See the first screenshot below)
  • Click on Show more if necessary
  • Click the button beside Other income taxes
  • The last category is Other Income Taxes Paid in 2016
  • Click on the button beside Balance due on your 2015 state taxes paid in 2016. (See the second screenshot below)
