I made an error when filing my dependent's status. I showed they were not being claimed on another return. The dependent refund does if change dependent status.

I made an error when filing my dependent's status. I showed they were not being claimed on another return.  The dependent made less than $5000 and the refund does not change with or without the dependent status.  Problem I have now is when I electronically filed, it was rejected. Amending the initial filing can only be done by mail.  My returns to FED, NJ and NY are tied up until that change is accepted.  Is there a way that I can submit my return thru Turbo tax assuming the dependent amended return is not process by 4/10/19.  JJB

Unfortunately, you will be rejected if you are trying to claim the dependent on your return and the change has not been made by the IRS and the states- their system will reject it. When this happens, there are two options: 1. Print and mail in your returns or 2. File without the dependent and then file amended returns to claim the dependent after their amended return has been changed.

If you already filed your return you will need to wait to see if it was rejected or accepted. If they were rejected you are able to login to your return to fix what you need to fix and fix the errors that caused the rejection and refile the return. If your returns were accepted, then you will need to file an amended return. You should not try to amend your return until the original return it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.
Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original return and replace them; they are processed as two separate returns.
Amended returns have to be printed and filed by mail.  It can take the IRS up to 12 weeks or longer to process them.   If you are due a larger refund than on your original return, your amended return should only show the difference and you will receive a separate check for it.  If you owe money on your amended return, it will show only the new amount owed, you will have to mail a check with the return.
