Thank you, this is helpful.  When added here, why is this amount not getting calculated into my total deductions?

The payment of additional federal tax for a prior year does not get reported on your tax return.  There is no deduction or credit for payment of prior year tax, if it was federal tax.  If it was state tax, and you itemized, you can deduct it as an itemized deduction on Schedule A.

Hi David, where at on federal Schedule A?  does it go under other itemized deductions?  if so, it's not getting calculated into the total itemized deductions. My calculations including the repayment puts me over the standard deduction rate but turbo tax is not showing the same calculations but doesn't show me why. Please help

I made a mistake on my 2017 state taxes which required me to pay back a portion off my return in 2018. Where do I enter this on my 2018 taxes?

I posted some screen shots above.  BUT  There is a limit on SALT deductions.  SALT is State And Local Tax.  Which includes property tax, any state tax paid like for last year’s return and includes any state withholding from your W2s and any 1099s you have.  You can only deduct up to 10,000 (5,000 MFS) for SALT State and Local Taxes.

This year the Standard Deduction will be doubling so many people will be switching to the Standard Deduction.

HOH 18,000 + 1,600 for 65 and over or blind
Joint 24,000+ 1,300 for each 65 and over or blind
