I'm trying to file my state return using the free version and I get the following message. "The direct debit option is not available due to your filing choices." I have gone through the return 3 times and I see no differences from my 2024 return.

This can happen when:

• the state is not set to e-file but paper mail
• your fees for tax preparation are coming of your refund- maybe at the federal level.

States have a payment portal online that is safe and quick. Check your state for how to make payments.

This didn't answer my question. I have filed and paid my state taxes for years with Turbotax and this year I can't do either. I didn't do anything different this year than I have in any other years. 

I either need this fixed or I need to file with a different service.

You can pay your taxes with direct debit, if you are e-filing your return and choose Withdraw the money from my bank account.

If you are printing and mailing your return, you won't see a direct debit option, but you can do this instead:

1. In TurboTax, select Pay by check when asked how you want to pay your taxes.
2. Follow the instructions to print a paper copy of your return.
3. Throw out the 1040-V voucher that prints out. You won't need it.
4. Go to the IRS Direct Pay site and follow the instructions to submit your payment.
