Unless you have instructed your financial institution to withhold state tax from distributions, they do not do that, so having a blank box 14, 15 or 16 on a 1099R is not at all unusual. If it was blank on your 1099R, you leave it blank in the software. Or....were there amounts in boxes 14 and 15, and nothing in 16?
The boxes were blank. I asked what to put in the box for the star blank 16 because the software would not allow it. At first they connected me to a tech that clearly didn’t know what she was talking about. The tax expert didn’t really understand either and after a lot of discussion told me to fill in the blank with the federal number. I did not feel confident at all in their response. They were polite but obviously were not confidently answering and I feel a promoting this as tax expert advice was wildly overstated.
@edandmary58 If you are referring to box 16, state distribution, on the Form 1099-R...If the box 16 is blank and there is an amount of taxes withheld in box 14, then enter the amount from box 1 into box 16. This will allow you to e-file your tax return. The amount from box 16 does NOT flow to the state tax return.
