I'm filing taxes late and the free option is gone. It's making me choose between costly options. Am I required to buy an option because I'm late?

The 2019 Online version has shutdown for the tax season.  In order to file a 2019 return with TurboTax, you need to purchase their CD/Download software which you install on your computer.  E-file for 2019 is also shutdown, you would need to mail in your return.
