I'm being required to apply for an Employer Identification Number. (EIN)

I was an independent contractor last year (received a 1099-MISC and so am filing as self-employed. However, I am at a point now where I'm being required to apply for an EIN but I don't believe I should have to do this. Any help appreciated.

You are not required to apply for the EIN.  You can skip this by clicking the "Continue" button on the Employer ID screen (see attached screenshot)
