I'm 69 yrs old and got married last year. My husband and I have not combined finances and I want to file as a Single. Can I do that?

If you were legally married as of 12/31/2020 and have lived together at any time in the last six months of the year then you can only file as Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately.

the thing is, your joint return will combine your finances, as far as IRS is concerned.

That doesn't change any ownership rights.
