I'm 16 years old and a dependent. Do I have to file taxes, and if so, will that change my parents tax file?

as a dependent you would only have to file a return if

You must file a return if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was over $1,100.
• Your earned income was over $12,550.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of—
• $1,100, or
• Your earned income (up to $12,200) plus $350.

under the following conditions, your parents can report your income (form 8814) on their return and you will not have to file. certain rules apply if parents are not filing jointly

Your parents can make this election if you meet all of the following conditions.
• you're under age 19 (or under age 24 if a full-time student) at the end of 2021. “
• your only income was from interest and dividends, including capital gain distributions and Alaska Permanent Fund dividends.
• your gross income for 2021 was less than $11,000.
• you're required to file a 2021 return.
• you do not file a joint return for 2021.
• you made no estimated tax payments for 2021 (including any overpayment of tax from his or her 2020 return applied to 2021 estimated tax).
• There was no federal income tax withheld from your income

CAN I FILE A RETURN IF I AM A DEPENDENT?

If you can be claimed as a dependent on your parents’ return, you can still file your own return so that you can receive a refund of taxes withheld.  If you receive a W-2 your federal tax withheld is in box 2 of your W-2; state tax withheld is in box 17.   (You will not get back anything for Social Security or Medicare withheld.) Be sure that on your own return you say that you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.
