I live in Cal and my spouse lives in VA due to military. Am I allowed to file a MFJ Cal return as NR because my spouse is NR or does it have to be MFS?

My spouse lives with me in Cal but his residency is VA due to military. We are filing joint for federal and can file MFS for both Cal and VA but filing MFJ NR for Cal is much more beneficial and the research I've done says this may be allowed. Am I allowed to file MFJ NR in Cal?
