I KEEP GETTING A MESSAGE TO CHECK AN ENTRY WHEN THE ENTRY IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT BUT IT WILL NOT MOVE PAST THIS MESSAGE

1099-R FORM HAS NO STATE TAX WITHHELD BUT AND TO E-FILE THE BOX NEEDS TO BE FILLED OUT. I ENTER ZERO HOWEVER IT KEEPS COMING BACK TO FILL OUT THE BOX!!

The state information must be left completely blank if there is no amount of state withholding.  You must not have the state name field filled in.  All state information must be blank.

Also, be absolutely certain for which box number it is asking for a value...

 

Certainly, if the state involved is one of the non-income-taxing states (AK, FL, NV, TN, SD, TX, WY), you just leave boxes 14,15,16 entirely blank in the software for that state.

BUT (Always a BUT)

..BUT if it was a state with an income tax, a few require boxes 15 and 16 be filled in even if box 14 is blank (don't put a zero in 14).  NY in particular requires box 15, and the total distribution amount entered into box 16....even if empty on your paper 1099-R.
