I just did my daughter's taxes. She received $1900 for work study at a college in Alabama. Turbo Tax calculates she owes $458 to Alabama. Why? She's a full-time student.

You may have entered $19,000 instead of $1,900. At $1,900, she did not make enough to have to file a tax return if that' her only income.
